How to find the best high quality airbeds?

There are a whole lot of different airbeds on the market. Some come with built-in internal pumps, some have external pumps. Others are designed for outdoor use as compared to strict indoor use. There is a crazy amount of features that can stand out and differentiate one air mattress from another. Of course, they also come in all different shapes and sizes... This can make it hard to find the best airbed for your needs.

We have studied over two thousand airbed models and know EVERYTHING there is to know about the individual features, the materials that are used, the manufacturers, and all the different brands. This site is dedicated to air mattresses, because we really believe that they can not only be extremely comfortable, cool looking, and convenient - we believe that they can be a real good alternative to a regular bed.

Air mattresses used to have a bad reputation. Some people still think of them only as an emergency solution. And yes, it is true that airbeds used to be somewhat uncomfortable and insufficiently durable. In fact, constant leaks and air loss of low quality airbeds are super annoying. BUT these times are largely over. When you know what to look for, a the best airbeds might just trump your ordinary feather-bed. Especially, the comfort and durability of airbeds has improved dramatically. That being sad, we believe that there still is some room for innovation and improvement - therefore we will continue to monitor the market and communicate with some of the largest and best airbed manufacturers and brands in the world. Now, let's take a look at some of the things that are most relevant when you are looking for the best airbed.

First of all you should think about the size. Airbeds like any other beds follow the traditional sizing rules. When you want to sleep on it with another person, then you want to consider a twin, queen, or king sized model. Now, with airbeds it is important to think about what you want to use it for - or rather where you want to use it.

The transportability plays a central role when you want to use it for travels, camping and such. The good news is that airbeds are VERY easy to carry around. So even when you have a queen sized mattress you should generally have no problem to use it on the road. But of course when you are planning on using it during your travels and you are sleeping on it alone, then a smaller size makes definitely more sense. It should also be noted that not all airbeds come in all sizes. This is something you want to be aware of. It is not uncommon that airbeds only come in twin or queen size. Now the size doesn't tell you anything about the overall quality of the mattress. There are many aspects to assessing the best airbed for you.

There is a trade-off between the size and transportability of an airbed. Larger sized mattresses should always include a thoughtful and efficient storage technology

An important feature to consider is the the pump. This is one of the elements that can set a real high-quality airbed apart from the competitors. But in the first step you want to think about two options: internal- or external airbed pumps. With modern airbeds these pumps are generally electrically powered. Internal pumps are usually more convenient because you don't have to carry it around and you also can't lose it.

Due to these reasons, most modern airbeds are designed this way. Most internal electric pump are powered by 100 -120V and the mattresses are then fully inflated in 2-8 minutes (depending on the size and other features). The firmness of the mattress can easily be adjusted by simply adding more air.

High-end products like the Lazery Sleep Air mattress even include a set of remote settings which can range from soft plush to extra firm. This is a cool feature that allows you to have same level of softness and support every time and it can be adjusted according to the preferences of your guests. Some of the best airbeds also feature a never flat technology that continuously monitors mattress air pressure and adds air to mitigate air loss over night. Electric pumps also differ in the noise level. High quality means quick and silent inflation! One drawback however: it is not that easy to switch the pump if it breaks. That's why you should be especially concerned about the quality and durability of built-in pumps.

When it comes to external pumps you have the advantage that you can easily change them when needed. They are generally more robust, but it is harder to precisely adjust the firmness of the mattress. Ultimately, there is a trade-off between different pump designs and you will have to decide which pros and cons matter for you.

Overall airbed comfort is critical. Ok, when it comes to comfort tastes are different. But there are certain features that generally define how comfortable your sleep will be.

Most people prefer raised or even double-raised mattresses - it is simply easier to get in and out of bed. Additionally, flat air mattresses offer less comfort than mattresses with a greater height. Shoulders and hips can not sink far enough to allow for an ergonomic position while sleeping.

The support of a thin mattress can also not be set as variable as with thicker models. Airbeds with a height of more than 15 or 20 centimeters already offer much more comfort. When it comes to price, raised mattresses are generally only available in the higher-end segment of the market and are therefore more expensive. You can expect to pay between 120 to 200 Dollar for a good-value raised air mattress. But the height of an mattress is not everything.

There are also differences with regard to the internal structure of the mattress. The best airbeds feature a special air coil system that help you the be a well-supported and straight sleeping position. Then there are the materials that are used. Those should always be ton-toxic and eco-friendly. Most manufacturers use PVC. Some products also feature a flocked top layer that is great for a more natural feel. It also prevents sliding. Higher quality mattresses are also designed in a way that minimizes air loss during the night. This is critical for good night sleep. Finally, there can be extra features like raised edges and included pillows that can be nice to have.
This defines the comfort of an airbed
The height of the mattress is an important factor. Raised mattresses (about 15-20 inches) are generally more comfortable because they can better balance out the internal air pressure. It is also just more easy to get in and out of the airbed. Especially when you consider to use your airbed more frequently you will appreciate more luxurious raised mattresses. These are also more expensive. But if you think about the overall utility then the extra bucks should surely be worth it!
Now, if you are looking at good quality airbeds, you will find out that they have an internal structure that consists of a certain amount of air coils. One good example is the SoundAsleep Dream Series Air Mattress, which "ComfortCoil Technology" consists of 40 internal air coils. These provide extra durability and support. The design of these air coils and their internal layering can have a strong impact on the overall quality of your sleep. Of course, individual preferences are different. We recommend to buy and test products that have a good return and warranty policy. This will help you to try out different models and decide on the one that best fits for you. Ideally the air coils should support the body such that they keep the spine in a straight, natural position.
The material is one of the most important factors when you decide on an airbed. Most manufacturers use non-toxic eco-friendly PVC for about 90 to 100 percent of the mattress. One great feature of luxury product is a flocked top layer than creates a more natural feel for the mattress. With that you can also use the mattress without extra sheets.  But would always recommend to use normal sheets for your airbed. The outside rims of some models are design to hold your sheet in place. Another aspect you want to consider is the durability of the material and the airbed design. High-end products usually feature double-layer construction with puncture-resistant materials. Something that can be a deal-breaker of cheaper products is a bad plastic smell. This is also something that we consider in our reviews.
Ok, when it comes to air loss you should first know that this is to be expected to some degree. This will happen when you first use the airbed due to initial stretching of the materials. Thereafter the mattress is supposed to hold air consistently. This is extremely important of course. Surely you don't want to wake up on a flat mattress. Some products are monitoring the air pressure throughout the night and add extra air through the internal pump. However, when you have a good quality air mattress this is not absolutely necessary.
Some airbeds come with extra features that can improve your quality of sleep. Particularly a clever edge design makes sense to prevent you from falling down at night. One good example of a twin bed with that feature is this Etekcity Upgraded Air Mattress.  Then there are airbed that include an actual frame. This elevates the mattress and can provide additional comfort. Framed airbeds are generally less transportable. One good example is this framed queen airbed by Coleman.
Insufficient durability of an airbed can be a major hang up. This is something to look out for! And this is also why we test each product over longer time frame. Double top-layered mattresses are more durable. Some of the best airbeds also include puncture-resistant materials. Most brands also include a special repair lit that makes it easy to fix minor leaks and damages.

A clever design gives the finishing touch. Clearly this is somewhat subjective. But the design plays a role. If you are going to inflate the mattress in you living room, it should not totally trash the ambiance of your furnishing. The SoundAsleep Dream Series is one good example for clear and beautiful design that fits in to basically any surrounding.

A Finally the best airbeds include a good storage system. The mattress should not only deflate in less less than 5 minutes, it should also be able to store and carry. You should look if the product includes a separate carry bag where it is easy to fit in the rolled up mattress.

This Is Our Airbed Review Methodology

The whole purpose of this website is to provide high quality reviews. To achieve this, we are working very hard and are always looking for ways to improve our methodology and provide added value for customers. We evaluate every product as part of a multi-stage process, that always involves at least two independent reviewers. Through collaboration we achieve a greater degree of verifiability.

The reviews are based on a 5 component analysis with regard to the (1) overall comfort of the mattress, (2) the features and quality of the pump, (3) the durability of the mattress (4) the design of the product, and (5) the storage characteristics. Each of the components is evaluated on a 0 - 100 point scale. The end result is based on product research, testing, comparison, and customer reviews. We try to test all major airbed models over a longer period of time. Due to resource constraints, this is not always possible. However, we will update our reviews on a regular basis in order to document our experience over a longer time frame.

We are concerned about adding extra value to customers. Therefore we create elaborate comparisons between the individual airbeds, the manufacturers, and the different brands. By using the filter function of this website you can easily find the best airbed for your needs. When we evaluate the overall quality of the products, we always score it against a peer-group. We believe that this makes the information more useful. The peer-group consists of a random selection of other airbeds with similar features. For example, when we evaluate a queen-sized airbed with a built-in internal electric pump, then we are constructing a peer-group of other products that also have those features. The peer-group analysis improves the comparability between products and therefore increases the decision-making of customers.

Do you have an airbed that we should review? Then please let us know. We are happy to find out about new ideas and products.
